Which models produce vertical 9:16 natively

The question "which models do vertical" has a boring answer, which is useful in itself. The one worth asking is which models also do something else.

Is 9:16 the default?

On every model that offers it, yes.

Open any model in Video Create and the aspect ratio field reads 9:16 before you touch anything. That's consistent across all seventeen models with a framing control — the Seedance family, the Veo family, Wan, Kling, MiniMax, Grok, Vidu, HappyHorse, LTX and Gemini Omni Flash.

Which tells you something about who the product expects. A platform defaulting to vertical is a platform built for short-form, and it means the format that needs the most output is the one requiring the fewest decisions.

Vertical is the default on every model that offers a choice. You have to opt out of it, not into it.

What does each model offer?

All eighteen, with the full option set from each dropdown.

Four things stand out.

HappyHorse 1.1 has the widest range on the roster. Nine options, including 4:5, 5:4 and 9:21 that nothing else offers. 4:5 in particular is the standard portrait feed ratio on several platforms, and this is the only model that produces it natively.

The Seedance family is identical across all four models — the same seven options including an auto setting. So switching between Seedance 2.5, 2.0, 2 Fast and 2 Mini never changes your framing options, which makes iterating on a cheaper tier and delivering on a better one straightforward.

The Veo family is uniformly two. Portrait and landscape, nothing else, across 3.1, Fast and Lite. Google's own documentation describes Veo 3.1 as offering portrait and landscape, which matches exactly.

Hailuo 2.3 has no framing control at all. Its panel goes length, then quality, with nothing between. Every other model exposes a choice; this one doesn't offer one.

Where this falls short. The table says what a model will accept, not how well it renders at an unusual ratio. A model offering 9:21 doesn't guarantee a good 9:21 result, and nothing in the picker tells you that.

What is the auto setting?

Only the Seedance family offers it, and it's worth knowing what it does before you use it.

All four Seedance models include auto alongside their six fixed options. The picker doesn't explain it further, so the honest answer is that it's an automatic selection rather than a documented behaviour.

We're not going to tell you what it resolves to, because the picker doesn't say and we haven't tested it. What's worth knowing is that it exists, that it's Seedance-only, and that on anything where framing matters you'd pick explicitly rather than delegate it.

Why does this matter more than it looks?

Because aspect ratio is one of only two settings you can't revisit.

Create mode is the only place you choose it. Edit, Extend and Motion all inherit aspect ratio from the source clip and hide the selector entirely. So the framing of a whole chain is fixed by the first Create generation, and nothing downstream can change it.

Which means the model you pick at the start determines the aspect ratios available to the entire sequence. Choose Veo 3.1 for the opening shot and every extension is portrait or landscape, because that's all Veo offers and the selector is gone by then.

The model you pick first decides the framing for the whole chain. Three of four modes won't let you change it.

And a project needing two aspect ratios needs two chains from two Create generations. There's no reframe at the end.

What if you need something unusual?

Three answers, depending on how unusual.

4:5 or 5:4 or 9:21 — HappyHorse 1.1 is the only model offering any of them. If a deliverable specifies one, that's your model and the decision is made for you.

21:9 — the Seedance family, MiniMax H3, or HappyHorse 1.1. Five models, which is a reasonable set for a cinematic ratio.

3:2 or 2:3 — Grok Imagine 1.5 only. The same situation as HappyHorse's exclusives.

Anything else — 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3 and 3:4 are all widely available, so those never constrain your model choice.

How should you decide?

Three steps, and the order matters because the first one eliminates the most.
